What to Expect - Week #2, Season 23

For Week #2 – June 13 — of the 2019 FACSAP Summer Harvest, we anticipate the following this Thursday:

BLENHEIM ORGANIC GARDENS – Lawrence and Becky Latané

  • Napa Cabbage

  • Cucumbers

  • Choice of Rainbow Chard bunches or Head Lettuce

I had planned to dig potatoes, but ground is too wet for that.

-Lawrence

GREEN THUMB GROWERS – Tom Miller

Green Thumb Growers does not have a harvest to deliver to Fredericksburg Area CSA Project for June 13. We continue to watch our Red Russian Kale and Lacinato Kale which will be our next harvest. This could be next week. The Red Vienna Kohlrabi is still about two weeks out.

-Tom Miller

HARTLAND NATURAL FARM – Jamie Whitaker

  • Green Cabbage

  • Assorted Kale bunches

Today we spent the day staking tomato plants. Everything looks good and, weather-permitting, we expect to harvest tomatoes, potatoes and garlic in the next two or three weeks.

-Jamie

DOWNTOWN GREENS YOUTH FARM PROGRAM – Jennifer Gron

  • Fresh assorted herb bundles – select from sage, parsley, thyme, oregano or mint

ROCK RUN CREEK FARM – Francis Ngoh

  • Garlic

  • Choice of Summer Squash: Zucchini, Magda or Yellow

TERRA STONE GREENS – Caroline Nicotera

Choice of:

  • Mixed Brassica Microgreens

  • Radish Microgreens

I will include recipes for those who are interested. In between this delivery and the next one, I can have a survey available if any are interested to share their preferences on Microgreen varieties they would like to receive. This way I will know what to grow or what not to grow...that is the question!

Here is the link to the FarmStation Podcast for which I was interviewed, speaking about Microgreens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqiPe2x5JM4. If you have a few minutes (60 to be more realistic), this is a good listen. Enjoy!

Very Best Wishes,

-Caroline

GOLDEN ACRES ORCHARD – John Thomson & Mrs. Scottie Thomson

APPLE JUICE & APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SHARES NOW AVAILABLE – Sign up this Thursday during the harvest pick-up. Delivery is scheduled for June 20.

We need 2-3 volunteers to pick up the Apple Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar from John in time for the June 20 FACSAP pick-up, either at the Orchard in Front Royal, or he can meet us half-way, off Route 17 North near Warrenton. Please send an email to info@FredericksburgCSA.com if you can help.

Sixty one (61) Gallons of Apple Juice have been reserved so far! Please remember to bring your payment this Thursday, either in cash or by check payable to: «Golden Acres Orchard».

My Dear Friends,

Thank you for the support you have shown our apple orchard over the years.

I realize that lining-up orders, getting money together, and arraigning pickups is a very time-consuming job, and that you do it at no charge.

We lost one of our main distributors of our apple juice last year, and we have had to switch gears rather fast to make up for that.

You came to our rescue last fall with orders for apple juice and apples, and have been a big help with subsequent orders.

Another crop of apples is on the way. The weather, so far, has been good. Last year, we had over twice our average yearly rainfall, but that was too wet. I killed the last mosquito in my room in the month of January!

We are currently well-stocked with our glass-bottled apple juice, and can supply any summer or fall interest. Our pick-up truck is road-worthy and I am glad to be using it to reduce the distance between here and Fredericksburg for the rendezvous.

I love how you are able to organize yourselves. I has been a pleasure to meet you.

Sincerely,

John Thomson
